Earth Tongues

A late afternoon visit to look for Short-eared Owls around the upland habitat of Cefn garn yr erw near Blaenavon drew a blank unfortunately. However a single Red Grouse was vocal and just visible from within a small patch of heather. Other birds included a single Kestrel, a Reed Bunting and a pair of Stonechat. On an area of trackside sheep grazed grassland were about 50+ Black Earth Tongue (Geoglossum spp.). These can be found in several places in the Blaenavon landscape but they are nonetheless pleasing to find.
